"Inspired Past, Promising Future"

Dream House Magazine July 2008

Dream House MagazineA century ago, prominent British architect Henry Sandham Griffith designed a stunning, 7,662-square-foot Tudor Revival home for Victoria barrister Alexis Martin.

Standing tall on a rocky outcropping overlooking its surroun-ding 1.6-acre estate, the home was prominent among the neighbourhood’s other stately residences, today minutes from Victoria’s bustling downtown.

In the 1930s, Yarrow Shipyards president Norman Yarrow lived here, but under later owners it was subdivided into three suites.

Today, painstakingly restored by premier homebuilder Abstract Developments, “The Griffith” is the heart of Edgecliffe, a four-home development in the city’s sought-after Oak Bay neighbourhood.

Once again a gracious single-family residence, The Griffith recently earned a heritage designation, a nod to the original architect, but also to Abstract’s Mike Miller, who has restored its 1910 grandeur while incorporating the modern amenities expected of today’s finest homes. In-floor radiant heat, gourmet kitchen, lushly landscaped rear patio and a wired-for-sound media room are perfectly at home with 10-foot coffered ceilings, double-height bay windows, Art Deco-inspired detailing and leaded stained glass.

Joining The Griffith on that original acreage are three vastly different, but equally stunning, homes designed by award-winning Zebra Design and built by Abstract Developments – once again linking an inspired past with a promising future
